Glossary

Administrator

A representative of an End User who manages the MULTOS data requests on behalf of an End User.
Application MULTOS Executable Language (MEL) code and associated data.
ADC Application Delete Certificate
AID Application ID as defined by ISO 7816-5
ALC Application Load Certificate
ALU Application Load Unit
AMD Additional MULTOS Data
Application Provider The organisation or service which takes applications and generates Application Load Units (ALUs).
Bureau A card bureau which undertakes card enablement and other processing on behalf of an Issuer.
Card Fabricator

The organisation which takes chips from Silicon Providers and embeds them into cards.

Controls Data Date The date on which the MSM Controls Data were created at the MULTOS KMA.
End User Issuer of MULTOS cards
Implementer The organisation which develops the code for a ROM Mask from the MULTOS Implementation Specifications.
IFD Interface Device. A terminal or reader which can communicate with an MCD.
Issuer A card issuer
IIN Issuer Identification Number. An international identifier for card issuers allocated on behalf of ISO and complying with ISO/IEC 7812
KMA Key Management Authority . An entity which provides digital certificates such as ALCs, ADCs and MSM Controls Data.
KTU Key Transformation Unit
MAOSCO Secretariat Company to the MULTOS Consortium.
MCD MULTOS Carrier Device. A microprocessor-based smart card.
MPA MULTOS Promotional Association. A non-profit organisation whose remit is to promote MULTOS in Japan.
MSM Controls Data Card enablement data. This is data which associates a card with an Issuer.
MULTOS Multi Application Operating System. The high security, open, industry-controlled, multi-application operating system for smart cards
M-SPI MULTOS Service Provider Interface. A software tool which enables Issuers and Bureaux to request card enablement data and application load & delete certificates. (Note, this will tool will be discontinued from 1st January, 2009)
Product ID A subset of the card base. An attribute chosen by Issuers to segregate their card base.
ROM Read Only Memory Identifier

Service Partner

(or MIP)

An organisation that liaises with a KMA and request/receives MULTOS data on behalf of an End User.
Shell A special mode of operation in which MULTOS redirects all application-level input commands to a defined shell application. System level commands that require special access privileges are not redirected.
Silicon Provider The organisation which takes ROM Mask information from an Implementer and uses it to create a MULTOS integrated circuit (‘chip’).
StepNexus An organisation providing secure end-to-end content distribution (including Smartcards) for a variety Service Providers
Strong Cryptography A cryptographic system whose strength is such that it is not exempt from export controls from a particular country
